Melatonin is supposed to be one of the better types of sleep aids. What is melatonin? Melatonin is a hormone that is produced naturally in our bodies by the pineal gland. Melatonin is produced especially at night because it's secretion by the dark and is inhibited by light. Melatonin is biosynthesized in the body from tryptophan. The presence or absence of light is detected by the retina. When the retina detects light, the synthesis of melatonin is inhibited; darkness promotes melatonin synthesis.

Melatonin and sleep go hand in hand. They are now creating or have already created various types of sleeping pills using melatonin in the ingredients. Melatonin comes in a liquid, tablet and intranasal forms. The melatonin found in supplements is almost always synthetic. Melatonin supplements come in immediate release and extended release formulae. If on the other hand, your problem concerning melatonin and sleep is staying asleep through the night, then try an extended release form of melatonin sleep aid. However be warned, It is not recommened to continue use of melatonin sleep aids for more than a month, as no long term studies have been done.
