Physiology of Sleep

Have you ever wondered why do we need to sleep? Imagine what we could get done if we did'nt need to sleep. Just exactly how important is sleep. How long could you or me go without sleep? We spend about 8 hours a day, 56 hours a week, 224 hours a month, 2,688 hours a year sleeping.

The physiology of sleep is simply amazing. Resting is one very important reason why we sleep. We sleep to learn and process information as well. We need to sleep so much that if we miss one nite of sleep, that our body will try to recover what we lost on other nights. The physiology of sleep allows us to understand that sleep is so important to us that with out it we feel sickly and lethargic, our immune system goes down and we find it hard to concentrate. The physiology of sleep lets us know that sleep seems to be universal, all species seem to need some type of sleep.

The actual physiology of sleep is alittle too complicated to go into much detail here, but I'll try a brief explanation. Physiology of sleep is the study of different parts of the brain and how they are all connected and function together. We know of how the neurotransmitters and brain areas involved in sleep and arousal create the area we call the reticular formation. Through the physiology of sleep we have found that stimulating of the reticular formation produces arousal and EEG desynchronization. Again in the reverse, through the physiology of sleep we have found that the destruction of the reticular formation produces sleep. The physiology of sleep can and has contributed so much to improving our understanding of sleep and it's effects on our overall health.
